Cancun (in Mayan: kaan and kun ‘cradle or nest of snakes’) There are two versions of the origin of the name, depending on the Mayan pronunciation: the first version is “nest or pot of snakes”. The second refers to the Golden Serpent, this is because the island of Cancun is shaped like a 7 and, at dawn, it looks like a golden snake due to the reflection of the sun.
