Important cultures developed in the state Mesoamerican during pre-Columbian times. Between they are the Olmec, Maya and Chiapas. Therefore, it has several archaeological sites of Mayan ruins and important tourist attractions such as the archaeological zone of Palenque, Yaxchilán, Bonampak, Chinkultic and Toniná.
San Cristobal de las casas
At present, it is a cosmopolitan city considered by some as the intercultural capital of Chiapas, in addition to being the main tourist town in the State. In 2003, it was included in the Magic Towns program by the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) of Mexico, for its architectural heritage and cultural manifestations. In 2010 and 2011, it was awarded by the President of the Republic, the recognition of the “Diversification of the Mexican Tourist Product”, with which it was consolidated as “The Most Magical of the Magical Towns of Mexico”.
Cascadas de agua azul
Its waterfalls are formed thanks to the tributaries of the Otulún, Shumuljá and Tulijá rivers, forming shallow canyons with vertical cliffs that give rise to its blue and white waterfalls. They are located in the north of the State of Chiapas, on the limits of the municipality of Tumbalá and the municipality of Chilón, 64 km from the city of Palenque (60 km by highway 199 that goes to Ocosingo and 4 km by a detour. They have that beautiful blue color due to the carbonate salts that they have dissolved in. The vegetation is of the mountain jungle type, exuberant, in some parts it covers the river, it is common to see trunks of fallen petrified trees.
Palenque
Palenque (in Mayan: Bàak ‘) is an archaeological site that, together with Chichén Itzá, Calakmul and Tikal, is one of the four most important towns of the Mayan culture that is located in the center of a tropical jungle in what today is the municipality of Palenque, located northeast of the Mexican State of Chiapas, the area discovered up to 2005 covers 2.5 km², but it is estimated that not even 2% of the total area reached by the city has been explored, with more than a thousand structures still covered by the jungle. Palenque was designated a national park in 1981. Unesco declared it a World Heritage Site in 1987.
